I have always been fascinated by the human mind and body – why do we make the choices we make? How do we manage difficult times in our lives? What effect does this have on us physically, emotionally and psychologically? To help me answer these questions I studied a double degree in psychology and criminology, which saw me working in the crime prevention and community safety sector for many years. But something was always missing from this equation. So, this eventually led me to studying further in nutritional medicine, where I was able to integrate my love for all things science with natural medicine and healing. During this time, I discovered I had endometriosis and needed IVF treatment to have a baby. I threw myself into “wellness” with everything I had… exercise, “clean eating”, intolerance testing, food elimination, natural therapies – all in the name of health and fertility. I successfully conceived my daughter Zara on my first round of IVF which convinced me that this was because of all my “hard work” and “being good” with food. But what was the cost of this? The development of health anxiety, a distorted relationship with food, and the questioning of everything I had learnt about health and wellbeing. So I went on a journey of discovery, where I studied with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating to become an Eating Psychology Coach. As a new nutritionist, I was determined not to encourage restriction, dieting, weight loss, elimination, food fear and weight/health stigma. I knew all too well the damage which this could do.
By integrating nutrition and psychology, I have come to a unique place in my work with clients – I like to think of myself as a “chilled out” nutritionist for the real world! No diets, no rules, no restriction, no fear… just a nourishing, gentle approach to nutrition which understands that food and health is about SO MUCH MORE than just nutrients. Food is life – it is pleasure, connection, desire, relationships, love and ultimately, happiness. I adopt a non-diet, weight neutral, body positive approach with all my clients, where diet culture and wellness culture are rejected and replaced with self-kindness, self-compassion, mindfulness and body wisdom. I am deeply passionate about empowering you to reach your highest goals and live your true life – without the judgement, weight stigma, fat shaming and diet/wellness rhetoric we are constantly surrounded by. This is your chance to say NO to the freak out around food, and to embrace body liberation because you are NOT broken and you most certainly do NOT need fixing… you are perfect just as you are, and together we can help you shine!
